From Douglas to Depay: recent Corinthians number 10s

The number 10 jersey is synonymous with protagonism in football, a number that carries historical weight, talent, and leadership, immortalized by geniuses such as Pelé, Diego Maradona, and Ronaldinho Gaúcho. At Corinthians, this number also has its own tradition and identity, having been worn by idols who marked an era, such as Roberto Rivellino and Carlos Tévez, technical and symbolic references in the club’s history.

In the last decade, however, Corinthians’ number 10 jersey has also been a source of disappointment for fans. Names like Cazares and Willian failed to live up to the historical weight of the number. In 2023, the responsibility fell to Róger Guedes, who delivered standout performances and assumed the spotlight before transferring to football in Qatar.

Last year, the Alvinegro started the season with Matías Rojas wearing the number 10. However, his stint was brief and discreet: the midfielder took the Parque São Jorge club to FIFA, obtained a contract termination, and ended his journey without leaving a mark at Timão. Afterwards, Rodrigo Garro inherited the number. In 2025, the number 10 jersey gained a new chapter with the official announcement of Memphis Depay as the new owner of the number at Corinthians.

Recall below the journeys of the latest protagonists who wore the iconic number 10 jersey for Corinthians:

Douglas (2008, 2009, 2012 to 2014): Douglas had two remarkable spells at Corinthians, standing out in the Série B victory in 2008 and the Paulistão title in 2009. However, upon his return in 2012, he was unable to replicate his previous performances.

Danilo (2010): Danilo, nicknamed “Zidanilo,” wore the number 10 during the Copa Libertadores. He was recognized for his aerial ability and for playing the role of maestro on the field.

Bruno César (2010 and 2011): Bruno César was one of the most consistent players to wear the number 10 for Corinthians. Although he stood out in 2010, he faced significant physical challenges in 2011.

Adriano (2011 and 2012): Adriano’s time at Corinthians is a subject of debate. Despite high expectations surrounding the striker, he was unable to deliver on the promises.

Marquinhos (2012): Marquinhos, a young player from the youth academy, surprisingly received the number 10 jersey, even though he was a defender. This assignment occurred after Adriano’s departure. He currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazilian National Team.

Jadson (2014, 2015, 2017 to 2019): Jadson had two successful spells at Corinthians. He stood out especially during the victorious 2015 Brasileirão campaign. In an interview with SBT on the night of August 22, 2022, Jadson announced his retirement from football.

Guilherme (2016): Guilherme arrived at Corinthians with the challenging task of replacing Jadson. Despite some standout performances, he was unable to meet the imposed expectations. He is currently without a club.

Pedrinho (2020): Pedrinho took on the number 10 jersey in 2020 but transferred to Benfica in the same year. He is currently at Shakhtar Donetsk, Ukraine. It’s worth noting that he was loaned to Atlético-MG between June 2022 and July 2024 due to the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Cazares (2020 and 2021): Cazares arrived at Corinthians with hopes of regaining his form, but unfortunately, that did not happen. He currently plays for Paysandu, a Série B club in the Brasileirão.

Willian (2021 and 2022): Willian Borges, a Corinthians youth product who came from Arsenal, was seen as a potential disappointment of 2021 and did not perform as expected. Absent in important matches, his tumultuous departure left a negative impression. Despite flashes of talent, his second stint at the club caused frustration among fans.

Róger Guedes (2023): In 2023, Corinthians’ top scorer was Roger Guedes, who ended his time at the club in September by joining Al-Rayyan in Qatar. He found the net 21 times in 41 matches for Timão throughout the year.

Matías Rojas (2023 and 2024): Signed from Racing, Argentina, in mid-2023, Matías Rojas arrived at Corinthians raising expectations among most fans, but on the field, his lackluster and indifferent performances became a concern. For the Alvinegro, he played 30 matches without any goal involvement. The Paraguayan left Corinthians in February 2024 citing unpaid wages and even filed a million-dollar lawsuit with FIFA.

Rodrigo Garro (2024): After Rojas’ departure, Rodrigo Garro took on the number 10 jersey throughout 2024. In 2025, the Argentine switched to the number 8, one of the club’s most symbolic numbers, with the official announcement of Memphis Depay as the new owner of the number 10.

Memphis Depay (2025): The Dutch striker was signed at the start of the season and had the number change made official by the club, as per a contractual agreement, taking on one of the most traditional jerseys in the club’s history.
