The 1974/75 strip was minimalist, a central crest of three wolves replacing the lone wolf. Wolves wore it as they defeated Manchester City in the League Cup final. Another classic followed in 1980, Umbro’s old gold with black trim and a V-neck becoming iconic after a 1-0 Wembley win over Nottingham Forest, Andy Gray scoring.

In 1982/83, Tatung-sponsored pinstripes elevated both home and away. The home was old gold and black with a V-neck, the white away carried subtle black pinstripes. Wolves finished runners-up in the Second Division to seal promotion after one season away.

The 1992/93 ‘tyre mark’ home and blue away were hard to miss. Wolves began with 12 unbeaten league games, their best start since 1949/50, before finishing 11th in the First Division. In 1993/94 the Wolverhampton city coat of arms returned with Goodyear, a black collar and sleeve trim, and it endures as a fans’ favourite, also appearing on the new anniversary kit.

Between 2002 and 2004, Admiral’s Doritos-branded shirts stood out, their era capped by promotion to the Premier League. In 2009/10, Le Coq Sportif delivered clean lines that still resonate, and Wolves stayed up under Mick McCarthy.

Adidas’s 2019/20 Europa League third shirt carried a Mexican-inspired look. A green base with sublimated hoops and red accents on the shoulder stripes, collar and cuffs split opinion, yet it remains among the most distinctive of recent years.
