The future of Nico Schlotterbeck is increasingly becoming one of the most exciting personalities in the Bundesliga. The 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund defender is facing some groundbreaking months – and according to a report in BILD , he is reportedly keeping a particularly close eye on two potential transfer targets, one of which is FC Bayern.
The speculation comes at a time when BVB desperately need clarity in the centre-back position. Schlotterbeck’s contract runs until 2027, but Borussia Dortmund are nevertheless pushing for an early decision. This is not only due to his importance to the team, but also to the fact that the entire defensive squad planning hinges on his future.
Schlotterbeck has been considered a realistic option for the German record champions for months – assuming that Munich fail to extend Dayot Upamecano’s contract, which expires in the summer. If talks with the Frenchman fail, the door for a Schlotterbeck transfer could open wide. The departure of Minjae Kim could also lead to a transfer of the DFB star.
Schlotterbeck would not only be an obvious candidate, but also a central defender with the right profile for Vincent Kompany’s game. Robust, strong, left-footed – Munich have been looking for precisely this combination for some time.

In addition to Bayern, Liverpool FC are said to be particularly interested. Like FC Bayern, the Reds wanted to sign Schlotterbeck back in 2022, but the international opted for BVB at the time. According to BILD , the English top club could make another attempt next summer, especially as Liverpool have been working on rejuvenating their defence for months.
The upcoming duels with Bayer Leverkusen could be decisive for Schlotterbeck’s future. Those responsible at Dortmund see this as a kind of assessment. If it turns out that BVB cannot keep up with the runners-up, this could influence Schlotterbeck’s considerations.
The defender wants to play for titles – something his entourage has repeatedly emphasized – and it is precisely here that the BILD report sees a scenario that could be dangerous for Dortmund: a disappointing sporting phase would increase the likelihood that Schlotterbeck would decide against an extension and opt for a new challenge.
Reports have recently been circulating that the German international’s frustration in Dortmund has grown noticeably, which is mainly due to the Black & Yellows‘ rollercoaster ride on the pitch.
Sebastian Kehl has recently emphasized several times how much BVB is fighting for its chief defender. In addition to a significant salary increase, Schlotterbeck even faces the prospect of the captain’s armband in the event of an extension – a strong signal from the club.
But time is running out. According to the WAZ, BVB bosses would like to see a clear trend before Christmas, because if Schlotterbeck continues to play poker, those responsible would have to consider whether to risk going into the final year of his contract – a scenario that BVB would actually like to avoid due to possible transfer losses.
