The former player made the decision to leave Middlesbrough for Wolves in November, where he inherited a side that were destined for relegation.

It took a while for Edwards to make his mark on the team, and whilst there was a brief upturn in form earlier in 2026, Wolves ultimately went down with a whimper.

Wolves criticised by Gabriel Agbonlahor for Rob Edwards sacking

Even though Edwards won just three of his 27 games in charge of Wolves in the Premier League, he had made it clear he was planning for the upcoming campaign.

As well as that, Andre spoke of his influence when signing a new contract, whilst new signing Kieran Trippier also talked up Edwards after he agreed to join.

So, this update came out of the blue, and, speaking on TalkSPORT, former England international turned pundit Gabby Agbonlahor was hugely critical of Wolves for the decision, as he insists there’s no loyalty in football.

Crazy. I think it’s wild. He did very well when he went back to Wolves. They finished the season on a high, with some very good results, the Liverpool game, Villa.

But, am I surprised? No, because there is no loyalty in football. There shouldn’t be any loyalty from players, and there definitely isn’t any loyalty from club owners, and there shouldn’t be loyalty from managers.

I hope he gets a big pay-off, and, Rob Edwards, you will go and get another brilliant job.

He left Middlesbrough to join Wolves because it’s the club he played for, the club he loves, his family live closer to Wolverhampton than Middlesbrough, and he did very well last season, and that’s how you get treated! Wild is an understatement.

These owners don’t learn, they don’t learn. You will see next season. Maybe Wolves don’t get promoted, and everyone will be saying what’s going on? Wild. Football is scary at the moment. Get your money and get out.”

Wolves must back Cesar Peixoto as they target promotion this season

This is a decision that will divide opinion. Agbonlahor’s comments are slightly excessive when you consider Edwards’ record, and it’s worth noting that the fans had turned on him in the stadium in the final part of the season.

Plus, he was appointed by Jeff Shi, who has since left the club, with Nathan Shi, who is no relation, now running the club.

So, if he had been sacked shortly after the final day, it may not have been a shock. But, obviously the situation has changed with the transfer updates, and it seems odd to have let Edwards have a big role in recruitment if he wasn’t going to be around.

But, Wolves will no doubt say that the likes of Andre, Trippier and Jimenez are important to the club no matter who is in charge.

Ultimately, this is a decision that will be judged further down the line, and there’s no denying Wanderers are gambling by replacing someone who has won promotion at this level with Peixoto, who has a mixed record over the years.

He has just enjoyed an excellent season with Gil Vicente though, and it’s now about backing the new boss with more signings of the calibre of Trippier and Jimenez.

If they do that, and Peixoto brings success, then the Edwards call will be forgotten about. However, if it goes wrong, then Shi will be under huge scrutiny for this bold decision.
