Gabriel Gudmundsson says he is back to full fitness in time for Sweden’s 2026 World Cup after a recent hamstring lay-off. The Leeds United left-back missed the club’s final four Premier League matches.
“It had been more than five weeks since I played a match. I got a good and much-needed dose [vs Greece],” he told Svenska Dagbladet.
“We had a plan to build myself up for the World Cup and I feel one hundred percent physically. The rhythm wasn’t the best, but the most important thing was to get going and feel it again.”
The 27-year-old sustained the injury in Leeds’ FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea, then missed a warm-up defeat to Norway after Graham Potter named him in Sweden’s squad. He returned to play 64 minutes in last week’s 2-2 draw with Greece, and the squad have since arrived in Dallas.
Gudmundsson will hope to keep his place when Sweden face Tunisia in Guadalupe, Mexico on 15 June, then the Netherlands in Houston, Texas five days later, before Ao Tanka’s Japan in Arlington, Texas on 26 June.
Signed for £10million last summer, he was among Leeds’ most consistent performers under Daniel Farke. “The goal was to help the club stay [up]. Everything has felt good. It will be exciting to see what we can do further down the line with the group we have. The fans have been supportive all season, absolutely fantastic.”
