Fernando Gago, the Universidad de Chile head coach, was taken to a Santiago medical centre for cardiovascular evaluation, a few hours after the 2-0 win over O'Higgins in the domestic league.

La Tercera reports that the Argentine underwent emergency surgery on arrival and remains under observation while further exams are carried out.

He missed training as he continues to be assessed. No timeframe has been given for his recovery.

Universidad de Chile have confirmed he will not be on the touchline for the Copa Chile tie against Santiago Wanderers. Assistant Fabricio Coloccini will take charge on an interim basis.

Gago, who took over in March, will return to his duties only when his clinical progress allows.
