Gallardo has rejected Vasco da Gama’s approach to replace Fernando Diniz and will not take charge of the Brazilian club.
The decision came as he bowed out of River with a heated, emotional win over Banfield at the Monumental. According to TyC Sports, he is considering a spell out of management before returning to the dugout.
Aged 50, he was acclaimed by the Núñez crowd, while the players were jeered. He thanked supporters for their unconditional affection and said he would remain attentive to the club even while away.
Gallardo began his coaching career at Nacional in Uruguay in 2011. After Ramón Díaz’s exit he took over at River, guiding a golden era that included two Libertadores titles, and remained in post until 2022. He joined Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia the following year.
His return to Núñez arrived sooner than expected, as he replaced Martín Demichelis in 2024. The second stint proved underwhelming and he departed in 2026 without a trophy. He will now rest before considering his next challenge.
