You could feel the tension in the atmosphere as proceedings for the hotly anticipated game of the calendar got underway.
Ahead of kick-off the Official Manchester City Women’s Supporters Club unveiled a banner, coupled with pyrotechnics to celebrate their 10th anniversary in what is a brilliant milestone for our fanbase.
As we got underway at the Etihad Stadium, it was City who saw the most clinical chances in front of goal with the opening half an hour packed full of action.
Rebecca Knaak opened the scoring on the 26th minute mark for the Blues with a perfect header, as she recorded her third goal in three derby appearances.
And soon City were flying, after Jade Rose won the ball back in our half, displacing Hinata Miyazawa’s shoe in the build-up, before Kerstin Casparij laid an outrageous cross into Bunny Shaw who netted her 97th goal for us.
If you weren’t already impressed and slightly stunned with City’s start to the game, you soon would be as we crept into added time as we recorded our third goal.
It was simply brilliant from Lauren Hemp, who started her first game since Tottenham, as she slammed the ball into the roof of the net just before the half-time whistle blew.
Coming into today’s game Manchester United had only conceded four goals, but after a frantic first 45 we saw a much quieter start to proceedings in the second-half.
And it continued in that manner with City edging closer in front of goal as Shaw looked to record a brace.
But neither side could break through the backline as Manchester was declared blue, following the result we stay at the summit of the table and now sit seven points clear of our cross-city rivals.
