Liverpool’s 7th highest scorer in the club’s history, Robbie Fowler, claims that star midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is capable of being captain after this season’s sensational performances.

“Szoboszlai is a player who can be a captain. He can be a captain based on his performances. Performances can dictate who your captain is or what you want from your captain.”

The forward, who made 266 appearances over two stints at the club between 1993 and 2007, also spoke on the future of the club in Rio Ngumoha, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, as well as speaking on the impact of Mohamed Salah’s announced departure at the end of the season.

Gordon? Diomande? – How Liverpool Could Replace Mohamed Salah In The Transfer Market…

Fowler was optimistic about all three players for the future, but feels Ngumoha can make an impact in the present, not just the future.

“If you’re a good enough player, you should be playing. He’s a player who can start. If you want to win games and you have great players who can change games, then manage it the other way [manage when he rests instead of starts].”

It was the pair up top that Robbie Fowler sees as Liverpool’s future, however.

Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak have had polar opposite starts to life in Liverpool, with the Frenchman scoring 17 goals this season, whilst the former Newcastle forward has seen his season riddled with injuries.

Fowler says Ekitike has “hit the ground running” in a season that has him at the top of Liverpool’s goal contribution list in the Premier League this season.

Fowler went on to say, “The Premier League is different to any other league, and he’s come in not really knowing what it’s like, and he’s been one of those players who’ve really taken to it like a duck to water.

“He’s scored goals; he’s been a handful. I think he can get better, which is great for the football club, and I think that’s great for Hugo Ekitike as well.”

Ekitike will be looking to make an impact on the European stage against his former club PSG, as well as on the international stage at the World Cup this summer, where he’s had plenty of minutes in the run-up to the tournament.

His Liverpool striker counterpart, Alexander Isak, is also someone who will be hoping to get a good run of games to finish the season, returning to make an impact against PSG and, if injury-free, will be hoping to feature in the World Cup with Sweden.

Fowler is a big admirer of the former Newcastle man and sees him as a signing that is part of Liverpool’s long-term future rather than the short-term.

The Liverpool legend said, “Isak is a player who can change games. He’s a player I’ve earmarked for life after Mo. Probably the way we played this year didn’t help Isak, but we’re probably not playing to the team’s strengths, so that tells me that Liverpool has always had a plan in the future to bring him in.

“He’s a player who will score goals, and I think he’ll be brilliant for Liverpool.”

The 26-year-old is back in team training, with a return to the pitch looking likely for the Champions League tie against PSG.

A crucial tie in the Champions League, coming after the announcement of Mohammed Salah’s departure at the end of the season, an announcement which Fowler thinks will give a huge boost to the fans and the team to win something for the Egyptian King.

“I think it galvanises everyone and gives everyone a bit of a lift to go on and finish the season the way we should by winning games and going out on a high because I think Mo deserves that.

“I’d love nothing more than to see Mo go out as an absolute winner.”

Liverpool will need all five of their standout performers in the next two games, as the Reds face Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday, 4th April, before facing Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.
