Trent Alexander-Arnold took a huge risk last year.
The 27-year-old opted to leave Liverpool upon winning the Premier League title. He then completed a high-profile £10m deal to join Real Madrid one month before his contract expired.
And right now it looks like that risk hasn’t paid off.
“Trent” as his No12 Real Madrid shirt reads has been in and out of the team all season. Injuries have hampered his progression and when he has got into the starting XI he hasn’t always impressed.
Last weekend brought about a shameful episode when Alexander-Arnold was dropped from the starting lineup for the Madrid derby.
It was reported that the right-back was late to a team training session with Alvaro Arbeloa deciding to punish the Englishman by putting him on the bench.
He recovered his composure to deliver a second-half assist but the writing is now on the wall for his Blancos career.
The latest reports from Spain indicate that Achraf Hakimi - perhaps the world’s best right-back - wants to RETURN to Real Madrid as soon as this summer.
That move would have a devastating effect on Alexander-Arnold - who has barely been able to push past Dani Carvajal for a starting berth this season.
If Hakimi comes in it will be curtains for the Scouser’s Madrid career and he will be forced to look elsewhere for first-team football.
But it’s not only Alexander-Arnold’s club career that is hitting the skids.
Last week he was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s pre-World Cup squad of 35 players. Reece James - currently injured - would appear to be Tuchel’s first choice but Trent cannot get a look in even as a second or third choice.
Tuchel is using players like Tino Livramento, Djed Spence and Jarell Quansah instead of Alexander-Arnold. He hasn’t played for England since last June and looks set to miss out on the World Cup even in an emergency.
The latest insult was Tuchel bringing Ben White back into the fold when Quansah had to pull out owing to injury. Therefore a bit-part player for his club - who walked out on the last World Cup - is favoured over Alexander-Arnold.
He was playing the best international football of his life during Lee Carsley’s England reign - a time when he was secure in his football at Anfield.
Much has changed since then.
While Alexander-Arnold may have improved his bank balance since signing a big-money deal at the Bernabeu his club and international career have completely derailed.
One ponders whatever will come next but he cannot say he wasn’t warned.
