Gareth Taylor believes Liverpool “owe Aston Villa one” ahead of their Women’s Super League meeting on Sunday afternoon.

Gareth Taylor on why Liverpool want revenge against Aston Villa

Aston Villa beat Liverpool 3-0 when the two sides last met at Villa Park back in December.

Rachel Daly bagged a brace, while the WSL’s second-top scorer, Kirsty Hanson, also got onto the scoresheet.

Liverpool could play with a much-changed side from the one that lost to Villa on that day. Liverpool enjoyed one of the most impressive WSL January transfer windows, with six additions to the squad.

Gareth Taylor believes Aston Villa caught Liverpool in a “poor moment” in December and is keen for revenge.

He said: “This is a good opportunity for us and we certainly owe them one after what happened at Villa Park.

“They caught us in a poor moment for us with the tight schedule of games we had that particular week and we were a little bit depleted with the squad.

“We are looking forward to it. We will get the players’ focus back and go again on Sunday and get them ready to fight hard for the team.”

Speaking in his column on Liverpool’s official website, he also gave an update on January signing Anna Josendal.

The 24-year-old Norwegian winger is yet to feature since her move from Hammarby last month.

Taylor said: “I’m hoping our recent signing Anna Josendal is getting closer to a return to action.

“Sunday’s game is potentially a little bit too soon for her. But it was good for us to get Beata [Olsson] back at the weekend, and it gives us good options now in the forward line.”

Four of Liverpool’s new signings started in their 3-1 loss to Manchester United last weekend. Their most recent addition, Aurellie Csillag, also came off the bench.

Liverpool are bottom of the standings, but their win over Tottenham gives them hope that they can pull away from the relegation battle during the second-half of the campaign.

Only four points separate Merseyside rivals Everton in ninth to Liverpool in 12th. The Toffees seem to be on the backfoot after sacking head coach Brian Sorensen.

Taylor could likewise come under trouble if Liverpool fail to improve following their busy January window.
