Pressure is growing on the Luton Town boss after their latest defeat left them 2 points above the relegation zone
Luton Town boss Rob Edwards has admitted that his side's form has not been good enough in "a results business" and revealed he has had no assurances over his future from the Hatters' board.
Luton fell to their 10th-consecutive away defeat at QPR on Monday night, losing 2-1 at Loftus Road courtesy of a cruel deflected decider that came when they were on top in the game.
Edwards' side went into the break level after Mark McGuinness' header had cancelled out Michael Frey's opener and were the better side after the restart but their dismal season took another disappointing turn just after the hour when Ilias Chair's long-range effort deflected off Morgan Fox, who was trying to get out of the way, and wrong-footed Thomas Kaminski.
The visitors were not able to battle back a second time, handing the R's several late chances as they chased an equaliser, so the full-time whistle confirmed their fourth defeat on the bounce and fifth in six games.
Having shown plenty of fight in their sole Premier League campaign, the Hatters were expected to battle for promotion in 2024/25 but instead find themselves in a relegation battle – just two points above the drop zone after 26 games.
Pressure is building on Edwards, with fans expressing their frustration from the stands in recent weeks, and the Luton boss has not shied away from the fact that the results have not been at the required level.
On the defeat at QPR, he said: "We had some good chances ourselves, it's another game I'm sitting here saying the same sorts of things. In a really finely balanced match, we've come out on the wrong end again."
"You're kinda looking up to the heavens at that point," he said of the hosts' fortunate winner. "On the ropes at the moment, just continue to get hit, after hit, after hit at the moment and that's tough."
He added: "The results are not good enough. You can see players are giving everything, you can see very similar performances recently. The results are not good enough and we are in a results business."
Asked whether he'd been given any assurances by the Luton board, Edwards replied: "No. Not at all. I've got a good relationship with Gary and the board but we continue to work really, really hard.
"All of us, players, staff and everybody. Again, we're in a results business. We know that and the results themselves are not good enough."
It's hard not to feel for Edwards – particularly after Monday night when they suffered a sucker punch like that deflected Fox goal – but he's right that the results have not been good enough.
Luton were tipped as promotion candidates ahead of the season and are in a relegation battle instead so it's no surprise that the tide has started to turn and patience is running thin among the Hatters fanbase.
He wrote his name into club folklore by taking them up to the Premier League but action may soon need to be taken to ensure they don't spend next season in League One.
There were positive signs against QPR and the visitors were in the ascendancy when the decider went in but unless the results turn soon, it's hard to see Edwards keeping his place – particularly given his reveal about having had no assurances from the board.
