According to Sunderland Echo, Gary Neville has delivered a glowing verdict on Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young, backing the 19-year-old to enjoy a big future amid growing England speculation.
Young has built on last season’s 27 senior outings by reaching 45 appearances in all competitions this term.
A Sunderland academy product since the age of seven, he signed his first professional contract in November 2023. His first senior taste came at Darlington, where he was named Young Player of the Season.
Subsequent spells at Salford City have accelerated his development, with Sunderland viewing the move as an ideal environment for consistent game time and experience.
Neville said the keeper has done really well and is very composed for his age, and he hopes Salford win promotion to League One so Young could return with them. He believes the teenager has a big future.
Internationally, Young has represented England at U18, U19 and U20 level, then earned a call-up to the U21s. His rise has prompted suggestions he could one day push for the senior squad.
