The Gunners had the perfect opportunity to take control of the title race with victory over their Manchester rivals at the Emirates Stadium.

The hosts got off to a brilliant start as Lisandro Martinez put the ball into his own net in the 29th minute.

But Martin Zubimendi’s loose pass allowed Bryan Mbeumo to level the scores.

A superb strike from Patrick Dorgu early put United in control, before Mikel Merino bundled in from a corner late in the game.

However, Matheus Cunha stunned the Emirates crowd by scoring a dramatic winner in the 87th minute.

Gary Neville believes Manchester City, who bounced back to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 on Saturday, will be getting excited at their title rivals’ form.

Neville said on Sky Sports: “If you are Pep Guardiola… our manager back in the day, he would go for us. So if Pep Guardiola goes in tomorrow morning, he will be saying, ‘Are you really going to let these off the hook? They were nervous, they were anxious’.

“I think he really must be saying to them, ‘Do you want this? Because it’s there if you want it because they are struggling’.

“You would prey on it a bit. I know Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta get on and they worked together. But if I were City, I would have been lost last week, but to see this today, their chests will be out.”

Despite the latest setback, Arsenal are still the favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

City have been far from convincing with their performances, while Liverpool no longer look to be in contention.

Arsenal made some silly mistakes against United, which showed their lack of confidence.

But they are expected to bounce back as they face relatively easier fixtures against Leeds United, Sunderland, Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur over the following weeks.

Mikel Arteta’s side have the best defence in the league, and they also have plenty of quality in attack.

Meanwhile, they boast the likes of Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in midfield.
