Ryan Gravenberch Named as Manchester United’s Dream Midfield Signing

Gary Neville has identified Ryan Gravenberch as the Liverpool player he would take to strengthen Manchester United this summer. It is a blunt assessment, and it tells you plenty about where United still look short.

United spent heavily before the 2025/26 campaign, bringing in Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for around £200 million. The attack got attention. The midfield did not get enough. Since Michael Carrick’s appointment, that area has looked like the obvious job to finish.

Neville made his choice clear when discussing the type of player United need. He said, “There’s a few but it’s harder because Wirtz isn’t exactly jumping out at me, Isak isn’t jumping out at me, Ekitike yeah, Dominik Szoboszlai maybe…

“I’d go with Gravenberch. If you said to me, “United, now, who would I take?”, I’d take Gravenberch probably. He’s the best of the three midfielders that United would need and we need a midfielder desperately.”

Manchester United Midfield Priority Clear

That is the key point. United need control, physicality and composure in midfield. Neville sees Gravenberch as the closest fit. At his best, the Dutch midfielder carries the ball well, covers ground and gives a side presence in central areas. For a team still trying to rebuild structure, that profile matters.

Liverpool’s own recent context makes the praise more interesting. After winning the Premier League under Arne Slot in 2024/25, the club regressed badly in 2025/26 and Slot was sacked on 30 May 2026. Despite spending around £446 million on signings, several additions failed to deliver. Gravenberch, though, remains one of the names viewed as a genuine asset.

Ryan Gravenberch Stands Out at Liverpool

Neville was also clear that Liverpool’s forwards do not tempt him in the same way. He said, “The [Liverpool] forwards are good but I wouldn’t probably swap them over Mbeumo, Cunha, Bruno, Amad… I don’t think I’d be jumping at taking any of them. I think they’ve got potential to go and do brilliant things but they’ve not proved it yet so I’d go with Gravenberch.”

That probably ends the debate. Gravenberch is contracted at Anfield until 2032, so a transfer looks remote. Liverpool have no reason to sell, and United know it. Still, the point stands. If you are asking which Liverpool player best fixes Manchester United’s biggest weakness, Gravenberch is the answer. For more on the latest remarks and transfer context, see the original report.
