Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini did not mince words in his post-match media appearances following the team’s defeat to Viktoria Plzen.
“The team fought until the end, trying to equalize. I don’t think that’s the case, on the contrary. We were weak finishing, that’s true. There are a lot of players up front who haven’t scored in a long time. We need to take a close look and ask ourselves why.”
“We lost a couple of balls, especially at the beginning, but the defense is ultimately what keeps us on our feet. In difficult situations, like the game went, they did very well at the back to prevent counterattacks in open spaces. The performance was ultimately positive.”
“Confidence is then given by performances, results, and the situations you create. Especially in the first half, there was so much room to be more effective. If we weren’t able to be effective in these conditions, it’s clear we need to think carefully, because it’s not a game where there were no opportunities, either as sometimes happens in the league against very closed teams, or like in the final stages, where all the conditions were there to play better in attack.”
“We needed to be more united as a unit, more dangerous, get into the box more often and shoot from closer. These are things we need to do to improve our attacking output, otherwise, no matter how much we say ‘we created, we created,’ it’s not enough, it’s too little.”
“I’ve seen some very good performances from several players, from several elements, and the attacking part is what makes you win matches, so we absolutely have to fix it.”
