Barcelona midfielder Gavi was probably low down the list of players that many would have expected to defend Real Madrid legend Cristiano Ronaldo, but ahead of Spain’s clash with Portugal in the Round of 16 World Cup, he has done so. Ronaldo has come in for significant criticism for his performances with Portugal thus far, with some suggesting that he should be on the bench for Roberto Martinez.

Gavi will be hoping to get more game time for La Roja against Portugal. Since he started Spain’s first game against Cape Verde, his five minutes off the bench at the end of their 3-0 win over Austria has been his only involvement. He has his work cut out to feature in his natural midfield position though, with Dani Olmo, Pedri and Rodri Hernandez looking settled in midfield.

Gavi backs up Cristiano Ronaldo against criticism

It was put to Gavi ahead of Spain’s clash with Portugal that perhaps Ronaldo’s influence weighs too heavily on their play.

“I always hear that, but from people who aren’t on his team, from fans. Those on his team no doubt have tremendous respect for him. Obviously, Cristiano is one of the best players in history and can make the difference at any moment,” he said in an interview with MD.

‘Spain and Portugal are similar teams’ – Gavi

Gavi went on to explain that he felt it would be a match-up of two similar sides.

“It’s a team very similar to Spain, to us. The key is to keep up the momentum we currently have. The important thing is for the whole team to stay united. Ultimately, I believe that’s what makes us stronger, and if we keep going like this, we’re sure to do well.”

Also on the opposite side for Portugal is Barcelona teammate and Gavi’s good friend, Joao Cancelo.

“No, the truth is we haven’t spoken. I think both he and I are mentally prepared and focused on the match. I don’t think he’ll speak to me until after the game, and I won’t either. Each of us is focused on our own country and national team – and on winning.”

The last time the two sides met, Portugal came out on top on penalties in the Nations League final following a 2-2 draw. Prior to that La Roja beat Portugal 1-0 in the Nations League back in 2022, but their previous four meetings before that were all draws.
