José Luis Gayà’s La Liga season appears to be over after the Valencia captain suffered a muscular problem against Rayo Vallecano. He will undergo tests on Friday to assess the damage, having left Mestalla fearing Thursday was his final outing of the campaign.
According to AS, initial examinations suggested a possible tear, which would rule him out of Valencia’s last two league matches, against Real Sociedad and Barcelona. Valencia are not yet safe, sitting four points above the relegation zone.
Until now, Gayà had not missed a match this season through injury. His four league absences came via selection choices at Girona and Celta and suspensions against Getafe and Espanyol. The Rayo game brought his first injury of the campaign, despite a career punctuated by various setbacks.
This is his first time in five seasons reaching 32 La Liga appearances, the last being 2020-21 when he played 33. He has only bettered this in four of his 12 senior seasons, with 35 in 2014-15, 34 in 2017-18, 35 in 2018-19 and 33 in 2020-21.
Renzo Saravia, another of Corberán’s players, will also have tests after going off on 30 minutes against Rayo. The Argentine will miss the rest of the season and could also be saying goodbye to Valencia, as his contract expires in June.
