AC Milan were at risk of making their season even worse last night, when the Rossoneri found themselves two goals down against strugglers, Lecce.
It is a lot of the same for Milan at the moment. Confusion, disappointment, frustration, with the odd reminder of quality here and there, and this has left fans in a strange situation once again. Whilst the Diavolo, eventually, won on Saturday, it felt like anything but that.
As Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes, the club went ‘to hell and back’ which is a superb analogy of the situation. However, whether the Rossoneri actually came back mentally and emotionally from the result is something that we will only see in time.
Yesterday, the side were ‘fragile and confused’, yet also ‘devastating and brilliant’. It was a display of opposites, where everything and nothing was proved. The first 60 showed the reasons why this team have struggled to compete at the top this season, whilst 14 minutes of brilliance showed why fans can be frustrated.
Despite taking a one goal lead via Santiago Gimenez, Theo Hernandez was deemed offside, so the game remained 0-0, at least until Lecce got ahead. Seven minutes in, we again saw the errors of miscommunication and lapses in concentration, when Tijjani Reijnders and Alex Jimenez found themselves at a mismatch – which Krstovic took advantage of.
Just 15 minutes later, the striker almost did the same again, after making Milan look very poor, all the whilst the Diavolo had another goal chalked off for offside.
More Stories / The Match
Gabbia’s goal was seen as a sign of life, with the side attacking slightly more and being more aggressive, but a lack of dangerous chances meant the Rossoneri could not begin to claw themselves back into the game.
Then, the second goal arrives. Lecce managing what the Diavolo have struggled to all season, a goal with efficiency, and desire. Once again, small errors across the pitch caused the goal, and for the nth time, the side lost focus a little, and were hurt as a result.
The second goal, again, caused a spark in the team as Conceicao opted to make a few changes, as Lecce’s levels dropped simultaneously, offering Milan something, a chance, a bit of vulnerability. Luckily, the side did not need any more awakenings, and the Rossoneri got into the swing of things.
Theo and Rafael Leao – who arrived on the pitch after the interval – created a ‘Dragon Ball fusion’, whilst Christian Pulisic also made an impact from the right, his penalty levelled the scoring, making things a lot easier.
Before he then gave the Diavolo the advantage 10 minutes from time, stopping the ‘haemorrhage’ of three defeats in a row.
As the report suggests, Conceicao will now keep his job a little longer, but all roads still lead to termination in the summer.
