Liverpool Women will be without Gemma Bonner for their upcoming Women’s Super League clash with Brighton.
Gareth Taylor revealed that the defender suffered a head clash in training, but gave some encouraging updates regarding some of Liverpool’s other stars.
Liverpool defender Gemma Bonner will miss their clash with Brighton this weekend after clashing heads with teammate Cornelia Kapocs in training.
The timing is frustrating, with the experienced defender close to rejoining the matchday squad before the incident. Bonner had missed Liverpool’s previous game against Tottenham.
Taylor explained: “We have had a clash in training this week where Gemma Bonner will unfortunately miss the weekend due to a head clash with Kapocs. That’s disappointing because we could’ve got Gemma back with the squad but it is the one game so we will be able to get her back integrated with the team next week.”
Although the setback is a short one, Bonner’s leadership and composure will be missed. The manager’s comments suggest she could return as early as next week once she has completed the necessary recovery checks.
There was a positive update surrounding Mia Enderby, who has returned to training following her injury scare against Tottenham.
Enderby appeared to land on her neck and was taken to the hospital after the scare, which caused a 22-minute delay against Spurs.
The forward’s knock initially looked worrying, but the Liverpool boss confirmed that it was largely precautionary.
“She (Mia) is back in training. She’s been training for the last couple of days and is back with us. I think it was a bit more of a precaution and looked a lot worse than it actually was with these types of injuries with the head or neck involved. It’s really important that we go through the necessary processes and checks. But yeah, Mia is fine. She’s back in with us and that’s a bonus.”
Taylor also gave encouraging updates on Alejandra Bernabe and Leanne Kiernan.
He said: “Alejandra is getting that little bit closer. I know we seem to keep saying that a bit but she should hopefully be close to that Chelsea game by the end of next week, having enough training under her belt to really reintegrate with the group properly.”
In regard to Kiernan, he added: “Leanne is coming through training more recently. Obviously a bit of a blow not to be able to have Leanne as an attacking option on the weekend, so she comes back to it as well. Outside of that, there’s not too many other changes.”
