The Grifone have been enduring a torrid start to their campaign. While they have beaten Serie B sides Vicenza and Empoli in the first two rounds of the Coppa Italia, they remain winless in the league. They began their campaign with a disappointing goalless draw at home against Lecce, before falling short at the hands of Juventus courtesy of Dusan Vlahovic’s solitary strike.
Genoa then collected a point on the road, securing a 1-1 draw with Como, but in their most recent Serie A weekend, they suffered a heartbreaking defeat in Bologna, as Vincenzo Italiano’s men rallied from behind to win it at the death. The Ligurians currently sit 16th in the table, with only two points in hand.
Similar to their hosts on Monday, Lazio have also been vastly disappointing in the first few rounds of the season. The Biancocelesti opened their campaign with a miserable showing in Como, losing 0-2 to Cesc Fabregas. Although they did rebound with an inspiring 4-0 win over Hellas Verona, they succumbed to back-to-back 0-1 defeats to Sassuolo and Roma in their last two outings.
Needless to say, their Derby della Capitale loss stung the most, so it remains to be seen if the team will be able to swiftly recover from a psychological standpoint. The Aquile are now 13th in the Serie A standings with three points.
Genoa (4-2-3-1): Leali; Norton-Cuffy, Ostigard, Vasquez, Martin; Masini, Frendrup; Ellertsson, Malinovskyi, Vitinha; Colombo.
Lazio (4-4-2): Provedel; Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Pellegrini; Cancellieri, Cataldi, Basic, Zaccagni; Pedro, Castellanos
With both sides desperate for a result, this could either be a very entertaining affair, or, on the contrary, a cagey contest with the two teams afraid of making mistakes.
Nevertheless, we’d like to think it will be the former case. Despite their struggles, Genoa remain a tough nut to crack in front of their raucous supporters, while Lazio’s forced tactical change (due to the midfield crisis) could give them an attacking edge, but they might also struggle to keep a clean sheet. Therefore, an action-packed draw could be on the cards.
