At a time when Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been ruled out due to surgery, Germany’s second-choice goalkeeper, Oliver Baumann, appears to have taken full advantage of his opportunities.

The Hoffenheim goalkeeper has been in fine form with the German national team, notably keeping a clean sheet in his last three matches.

Baumann’s impressive performances have led many to believe that coach Julian Nagelsmann might prefer him ahead of ter Stegen in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to the media ahead of the crucial game against Slovakia (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Nagelsmann was asked about Baumann potentially becoming the starting goalkeeper in the World Cup.

However, the young manager remained coy about the situation, refusing to promise anything to the Hoffenheim star while admitting that ‘It depends on many factors’.”

The former Hoffenheim coach went on to admit he is impressed by Baumann’s performances, but revealed that the decision won’t be taken by him alone.

“I’m very happy with Oli, but it’s not just my decision; it’s also up to the goalkeeping coaches; we decide together. Oli is playing very well and I’m very satisfied with him, but the decision depends on many factors,” he said.

This could be a momentary relief for ter Stegen, but at the same time, it is pretty clear that Germany would prefer Baumann if the Barcelona star continues to remain on the sidelines.

Therefore, a move away from Camp Nou in the upcoming January transfer window could prove to be integral for ter Stegen if he wants regular game-time during the second half of the season.

Thankfully, the German international has had no shortage of suitors, with Turkish outfit Besiktas notably renewing interest in the goalkeeper.
