Germany football icon Lothar Matthaus believes Real Madrid will come out on top against Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash.
The two Madrid giants have not faced each other in the competition since 2017, but their upcoming encounter is set to revive a fierce rivalry that saw them meet four times in just four years between 2014 and 2017.
This clash brings back memories of the previous high-stakes meetings between the two sides, particularly in the Champions League finals.
Real Madrid secured victory on both occasions—winning 4-1 in extra time in 2014 and then prevailing on penalties in 2016.
Interestingly, the managers from that era remain the same, with Carlo Ancelotti still in charge of Los Blancos and Diego Simeone leading Atletico. Their deep knowledge of each other’s tactics will add an intriguing layer to this encounter.
“I would have preferred to see an international match at this stage rather than the Madrid derby. The two giants have already met twice in the Champions League final and on both occasions there was a great fight,” said Matthaus.

Despite a few setbacks in the group stage, where Madrid lost three matches and had to rely on the playoffs, they managed to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.
Their performance against Manchester City was a clear example of how they thrive under pressure. Matthaus expects them to maintain that level and book their place in the quarter-finals.
Atletico, however, are not a team to be underestimated. Their fighting spirit and intensity, especially at the Estadio Metropolitano, have caused trouble for opponents in the past.
“In the Champions League, Real Madrid lost three times in the league phase and therefore had to resort to the playoffs.
“But against Manchester City, Real Madrid were up to the task. As always, when it matters. That’s why I think Real Madrid will make it to the quarter-finals. But Atletico will give it their all again,” added the Germany legend.
