German starting XI player ratings:

GK: Alexander Nübel – 5/10

A quiet night for the VfB Stuttgart shot-stopper who had little to do in the first half and that pattern continued after the break. Little he could do for Ghana's well-worked goal.

RB: Joshua Kimmich – 7/10

Fulfilled a playmaking role by drifting inside in possession and orchestrating play. Made a vital clearance to prevent Antoine Semenyo's cross finding someone in the box. Played in defensive midfield late on but skied a fine chance to win the game.

CB: Jonathan Tah – 7/10

Threatening from set-pieces and constantly emerged with the ball from his respective duels. Replaced by Antonio Rüdiger at the break but didn't put a foot wrong all night.

CB: Nico Schlotterbeck – 6/10

A marked improvement from his difficult night in Basel last Friday. The Dortmund defender didn't contribute much in possession but won back the ball on several occasions. A clutch second-half block denied Adu of a goal. Picked up a yellow card for a foul on Yirenkyi.

LB: Nathaniel Brown – 7/10

Extremely composed on his starting debut and didn't look out of place in defence. Crucial piece of one-one-one defending to keep Prince Adu out in the first-half, and was replaced by David Raum on 60 minutes.

DM: Angelo Stiller – 6/10

The midfield anchor played a crucial role in dictating the play. His shot on the left-hand side of the box yielded a penalty from which Havertz converted. Made way for Vagnoman with 30 minutes remaining.

DM: Pascal Groß – 5/10

Did the basics and often offered himself to teammates for passes when under pressure. Probably lacks the necessary athleticism for midfield battles to come against trickier opposition. Goretzka took over past the hour.

LM: Florian Wirtz – 6.5/10

Wonderful early pass to find Havertz and drifted into half spaces to probe passes in behind the Ghanaian defence. Unlucky to have a well-taken goal ruled out for offside against Woltemade. Made way for Führich on 60 minutes.

AM: Nick Woltemade – 4/10

Wasteful an early chance and strayed offside by mere inches before playing the key pass for Wirtz's chalked off goal. A luckless night continued as he hit the post after the break, but did well to block a goal-bound Ghanaian set-piece routine. Hooked for Sane on 78 minutes.

RM: Serge Gnabry – 5/10

Barring a stray pass here and there alongside the odd loose touch, the Bayern winger offered a lot on both flanks with tireless energy. Hooked for Lennart Karl at the interval.

ST: Kai Havertz – 7/10

Great vision to pick out Woltemade for an early chance and constantly posed a threat. Unlucky to see his free-kick hit the post, but remained ice-cool to convert his penalty before the break and that was his last act.

Substitutions:

Lennart Karl – 6/10 (45 mins)

Came on at half-time for his club teammate Serge Gnabry. Picked out Woltemade with a great cross and dribbled with promise on the right. Spurned a gilt-edged chance late on.

Deniz Undav – 6.5/10 (45 mins)

The darling of the night, roared on by the Stuttgart fans present, eventually got his chance at half-time. Initially struggled but did so well to prod home an 88th-minute winner.

Antonio Rüdiger – 5.5/10 (45 mins)

Replaced Jonathan Tah at the break and instantly looked to get on the end of a set-piece. Didn't put a foot wrong in 45 minutes.

Leon Goretzka – 6.5/10 (60 mins)

Replaced Pascal Groß just past the hour mark and brought a noted physical boost. Set up Karl late on, but the latter should have scored. A key pass in setting up the second goal.

Chris Führich – 5.5/10 (60 mins)

Won a couple of frees with a menacing runs down the left but otherwise failed to live up to Wirtz who he was introduced for on the hour.

David Raum – 6/10 (60 mins)

Took over from Nathaniel Brown on 60 minutes and instantly made a big clearance. Also went close from a long-range free kick while delivering a some decent set-pieces.

Josha Vagnoman – 3/10 (60 mins)

Failed to deal with Derrick Köhn on the break who skipped past him to sat up the goal for Abdul Fatawu. Didn't impose himself on the game.

Leroy Sané – 6/10 (78 mins)

Replaced Woltemade with 12 minutes remaining and linked up well with Goretzka to create a chance for Karl who inexcusably fired wide. Provided the match-winning assist for Undav late on.
