On Saturday, Germany will play its first game in the U19 Euros for the first time since 2017. The two-time champions failed to progress from the qualifying stages in the five tournaments after the one hosted by Georgia. The U19 Euros are played annually, but UEFA cancelled the 2020 and 2021 editions because of COVID-19.

On their return to the eight-team tournament, Hanno Balitsch’s side is seeded in the group of death. Fellow two-time winners England, Norway and the Netherlands are grouped alongside Germany, while holders Spain have Denmark, Montenegro and hosts Romania on their path.

Norway are one of the only three teams that kept their place from last year’s tournament in Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, Germany’s first opponent also make their maiden appearance since reaching the semi-final in the 2017 edition. Back then, the two teams also went head-to-head in the first game, with the Netherlands beating Germany 4-1.

In the opening game of this year’s tournament, record champions Spain beat Denmark courtesy of an own-goal by Oscar Gadeberg-Buur. In the other game of the group, the hosts came from behind to beat debutant Montenegro with a 90th-minute strike from David Barbu.

Team News

Germany U19

The team is coached by Balitsch, who started working with Germany’s youth teams via the role of assistant coach to Frank Kramer in the 2017 Euros. Incidentally, the only two foreign-based players are Germany’s top scorers in the qualifying campaign.

Barcelona’s Noah Darvich and Cercle Brugge’s Paris Brunner were also key players in Germany’s U17 Euros and World Cup triumphs a couple of years ago. Borussia Dortmund’s duo Almugera Kabar and Kjell Wätjen, who will miss the Club World Cup, are notable names in the 20-man squad.

More players from the successful U17 squad lead the attacking line with the presence of Max Moerstedt, Assan Ouédraogo and Robert Ramsak.

Netherlands U19

Only starting goalkeeper Joeri Heerkens plys his football outside the Netherlands as the Czechia-born custodian is currently at Sparta Prague. Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, whose name is linked with Liverpool as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s replacement, is the biggest name in the Netherlands’ roster.Ayoub Oufkir finished the qualifying campaign with five goals, which is only one less than the top-scorer, Daniel Mikołajewski. The Sparta Rotterdam winger scored all goals when the Netherlands secured qualification with a 4-0 win in the Czech Republic.

One name rings a bell more than anyone in the Netherlands’ squad with the inclusion of Twente’s striker Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink, the son of the classic kits legend Jan.
