Speaking exclusively to DFB.de, Germany U21 debutant Lennart Karl discussed several topics including how he heard of his nomination, jumping from the U17s to U21s, his playing style and much more.
Karl (17) was named in Bayern Munich’s Club World Cup squad, impressing Vincent Kompany in training, and during his 45 minutes against Auckland City which resulted in the youngster being promoted to the first team squad.
In 12 appearances across all competitions, Karl has three goal contributions (two goals, one assist), which has resulted in a call-up to Antonio Di Salvo’s squad.
On finding out about his nomination, Karl said: “I was at the doctor’s for a routine check-up when Antonio Di Salvo called me. I didn’t hear the call at first, so I received a message from the head coach asking me to call him back.
“I called back, he told me that I had earned my nomination for the upcoming U21 international matches based on my performances at Bayern Munich.”
Karl jumped from the U17s to the U21s, but it’s not a leap into the unknown for the teenager.
“I feel very welcome here, as I already know a few of the guys well – Tom Bischof, Noel Aseko and Arijon Ibrahimović, for example,” said Karl.
“The situation is similar to what I was in at my club. I also made the jump to the first team a bit earlier at Bayern Munich. So everything fits perfectly.”
On his goals with the U21 squad, Karl added: “I want to settle well within the team.
“I want to show my strengths and work on my weaknesses.
“My goal is to get plenty of playing time, which I’ll have to earn. Even as a younger player, I expect myself to start from the beginning.”
Karl has already exhibited his excellent footballing ability. When asked to describe the type of player he is, the 17-year-old responded: “I’d say I have a lot of speed and a quick burst of acceleration.
“Most of my opponents already know that I like to cut inside. Another strength of mine is that I’m not afraid of my opponents – no matter how old they are.
“Of course, I respect all my opponents, but I always try to play normal football.
“That’s the best way to showcase your qualities.
“I still need to work on my first touch with my right foot – that’s what I need to focus on.”
Already in a short Bayern Munich career, Karl has learnt so much from world class players.
“I learn a lot from my attacking teammates, especially regarding the movements of Michael Olise and Luis Díaz,” said Karl.
“Of course, you can observe them, but you also have to showcase your own strengths.
“Working with a coach like Vincent Kompany naturally makes me better every day. Within the team, I didn’t talk much during the first month or two, but now it’s quite normal for me to chat with my teammates off the pitch as well.”
