The votes cast by Manchester City pair Gianluigi Donnarumma and Bernardo Silva for the 2025 edition of FIFA’s ‘The Best’ awards have been revealed.
Ousmane Dembele was crowned as the winner of the Men’s Best Player off the back of a Ballon d’Or winning season, wherein the 28-year-old France international led Paris Saint-Germain to a historic treble and the club’s premier UEFA Champions League title.
Donnarumma was part of the PSG side that swept all before them and walked to the UEFA Champions League title last term, famously thrashing Inter Milan in a 5-0 win in the final in Munich to round off an incredible year for Luis Enrique and co.
However, it was just months later that Donnarumma fell out with PSG bosses over a contract dispute and was axed from the squad by Enrique, who deemed the Italy international surplus to requirements at the Parc des Princes and signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille to replace the ousted Donnarumma.
PSG’s loss was Manchester City’s gain as the Blues had a fairly open run at one of the greatest shotstoppers in the world, whose services they secured on the final day of the recent transfer window for a cut-price £26 million deal widely acknowledged as the signing of the summer.
Donnarumma has made a blistering start to life at the Etihad Stadium, with his performances keeping fellow summer arrival and Manchester City academy graduate James Trafford on the outskirts of the starting XI despite the Englishman starting the 2025-26 season as the Blues’ number one.
Manchester City underwent major upheaval in the summer following the appointment of Hugo Viana as the club’s sporting director, with the Portuguese executive signing off on the departures of a series of senior stars past their prime.
Bernardo Silva and John Stones are among Guardiola’s longest-serving players in England and the pair – who share a close friendship off the pitch – were allowed to enter the final year of their respective deals in the summer – though there is major uncertainty over their future(s) as we enter 2026.
While Stones has not been first-choice in defence this season, Silva was handed the Manchester City armband by Guardiola in the summer after the permanent departure of Kyle Walker to Burnley for £5 million.
Silva has been the bedrock of Manchester City’s midfield since his arrival from AS Monaco for £43 million in 2017 and amid interest from Benfica, this could well be the Portugal international’s final season at the Etihad Stadium.
With Dembele crowned as FIFA’s 2025 ‘The Best’ Men’s Player, it can now be revealed that Silva’s top three votes for the crown (in order) were Vitinha, Nuno Mendes and Dembele – all hailing from PSG.
Meanwhile, Donnarumma’s votes for the award (in order) were Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi and Lamine Yamal – with the former two again hailing from PSG and Yamal impressing for Barcelona last term.
