Pep Guardiola has hinted that his new-look Manchester City squad will see extensive rotation this season, as he considers whether to hand Gianluigi Donnarumma (26) his debut in Sunday’s derby against Manchester United, as reported by BBC Sport.
City’s summer reshaping saw long-time No.1 Ederson depart for Fenerbahce after eight years of unprecedented success, with Ilkay Gundogan and Manuel Akanji also securing moves away from the club this summer.
In Donnarumma, signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £26m, Guardiola now possesses a towering presence in goal. The Italy international, 26, has already proven himself on the biggest stages, but his comfort on the ball is often contrasted with Ederson’s mastery in possession. Guardiola stressed, however, that City “didn’t take Gigi to do what Ederson has done,” insisting instead that the team would adapt to the strengths of their new arrival.
The decision is complicated by James Trafford’s arrival at the club. The 22-year-old has begun City’s first three league fixtures and is considered a long-term option. Guardiola acknowledged only one can start, but promised “everyone will be involved” as the season unfolds.
Across Manchester, United boss Ruben Amorim confirmed Altay Bayindir will retain his place in goal for the derby, leaving deadline-day signing Senne Lammens waiting for his debut.
