FIFA president Gianni Infantino has downplayed security concerns in Mexico following recent cartel violence, saying he remains very calm ahead of the World Cup. Speaking to AFP in Barranquilla on Tuesday, he said everything would be fantastic during the tournament, which runs from 11 June to 19 July.
The unrest followed the death of powerful drug trafficker Nemesio Oseguera, known as "El Mencho". Mexico is scheduled to stage four World Cup matches.
Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum also moved to reassure travelling supporters, saying they would face no risk this summer and that full security guarantees would be in place, with the event shared with the United States and Canada.
Several football fixtures were postponed on Sunday, notably in Guadalajara, one of the World Cup host cities. Sheinbaum said the situation was already under control.
Mexico is due to host the World Cup qualifying play-offs from 26 to 31 March, with two places on offer.
