Santiago Gimenez was actually one step away from a move to Roma in this last transfer window.

His father, Christian Gimenez, confirmed the story in a new interview.

“The truth is, I didn’t sleep all night. Being in constant communication with the club and listening to the sporting director’s words, doubts were starting to arise.”

“The transfer window was closing, so I had to be aware of what was happening. We didn’t even have time to find out if it was true that the club wouldn’t consider Santiago.”

“This is the World Cup year, and if he hadn’t had the chance to fight for a place in the team, it would have been complicated and complex. We’re happy that Santi stayed at Milan.”

“At a certain point, they doubted his ability because both the coach and the sporting director had just arrived. At first, we heard a lot of things, then we listened to the statements of Milan’s sporting director and we began to understand what was really going on. We didn’t know where he would go.”

“Santi started against Lecce, and the truth is, everything was very confusing. His agent started contacting the club, given that there was a possibility of making that swap, but at no point was Santi consulted about the situation.”

“He’s a Milan player, he has a contract, and on Monday morning, all parties met: the president, the sporting director, and advisors like Ibrahimovic, decided that Santi would stay. They were pushing for that swap, but it was never confirmed.”

“Leaving Gimenez out on loan after paying €40 million for him a few months ago? It seems incomprehensible to me. I don’t know what really happened, but it was discussed. In the end, it all depends on him.”

“Santiago loves Milan and wants to stay, and if he’s not part of the club, it’s not the end of the world. He’s very happy here and struggled to get to this team. Milan puts you to the test every weekend. Ten players have left since September, but I have great faith that he’ll have a great season.”
