Son Heung-min scored direct from a corner as Tottenham beat Manchester United 4-3 to progress to the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Goals from Dejan Kulusevski, Son, and a brace from Dominic Solanke saw Ange Postecoglou’s side progress to their first semi-final in three seasons.
Joshua Zirkzee, Amad Diallo and Jonny Evans responded for Ruben Amorim’s United, but it was not enough as the Red Devils were knocked out.
Here are five things we learnt from the match…
Marcus Rashford was once again omitted from the Manchester United squad for their trip to Tottenham. This comes after being left out of the matchday squad for the Manchester derby on Sunday, where United went on to win without him. Rashford then admitted on the following Tuesday that he was ready for a new challenge away from the Red Devils. For now it appears the 27-year-old might have played his last game for Manchester United.
It would not be a match involving Tottenham Hotspur if they did not almost let a comfortable lead slip. From being 3-0 up in the 60th minute to finding Manchester United only one behind only ten minutes later. Two errors from Fraser Forster contributed to a poor performance from United almost becoming an extraordinary comeback. Spurs restored their two goal advantage in the 90th minute before Jonny Evans scored United’s third of the game three minutes from the end. The home side held on to win, but made it extremely difficult for themselves.
Dejan Kulusevski is having a superb season. The Swedish international has been Tottenham’s best player by an absolute mile, in a campaign of big highs and even bigger lows. His transition from the right hand side into the centre has been a stroke of genius by Ange Postecoglou, and Spurs have reaped the benefits, with the 24-year-old orchestrating from the front. He got his rewards from the match with a goal one minute after the break.
Manchester United were well and truly outclassed by Tottenham for the first 60 minutes of this Carabao Cup quarter-final. The north Londoners found themselves 3-0 up in side the first hour, and Amorim’s side had no response to their hosts’ dominance. The Red Devils found their way back into the match through two Fraser Forster howlers, but they were unable to find the desired equaliser. It is only five weeks into Amorim’s reign, but there is plenty still left to sort out.
What do you not want to happen in a Carabao Cup quarter-final? Your goalkeeper to make two horrific errors, which is exactly what happened to Tottenham stopper Fraser Forster and Manchester United’s Altay Bayindir. The former England international first played a loose pass which was intercepted for United’s first of the match, before smashing the ball directly at Amad Diallo which ricocheted into his goal. Bayindir first poorly parried out Pedro Porro’s long range strike which allowed Dominic Solanke to tap home, before being lobbed by Son Heung-min direct from a corner.
