Flamengo midfielder Lucas Paquetá is being sued by goalkeeper João Eduardo Lago Magalhães, 23, over alleged unpaid wages from his time with Paquetá Sports, a seven-a-side team. The claim also seeks victory bonuses, holiday pay, and INSS and FGTS contributions.
Paquetá prevailed at the first hearing. On 9 March the goalkeeper filed an appeal seeking R$ 66,000 in labour sums and penalties, plus damages for moral harm, and no new hearing date has been set.
Magalhães attempted to evidence his role with training photos and text messages, but the 12th Labour Court of Rio de Janeiro at TRT-1 ruled the material insufficient. He maintains he played for the side from September 2023 to July 2024.
“The pay itself was not what interested me. We had agreed the minimum, R$ 1,000 as a help with costs, and 10 percent for each win with matches worth at least R$ 20,000. There was no contract or formalisation, only the messages and agreements in the case,” he told Metrópoles.
In the written decision, the judge said that merely “training” does not by itself indicate an employment bond, adding that participation in training alone does not show the subordination or regularity needed to establish a contract.
Alongside Lucas Paquetá, the action also names his mother, Cristiane Tolentino Coelho, his brother, Matheus Paquetá, and the companies Paquetá 10 Esportes Ltda and LPaquetá Agenciamento em Esporte Ltda. Those representing the midfielder have not commented.
