Andrés Gómez has responded to Renato Gaúcho’s call to attack the box, scoring twice in two matches, including the winner against São Paulo. According to Globo.com, 10 days earlier he led the Brasileirão for shots yet was still without a league goal.

The Colombian’s recent goals arrived from the right, finished with composure. Against Remo he beat his marker and struck with his left, then against São Paulo he lashed in a first-time rebound to complete the comeback.

Renato has long pushed his forwards to occupy the area, urging greater presence rather than simply creating from wide. Gómez has taken that on board, and with more bodies arriving in the box São Paulo struggled to track runners.

The upturn comes at a pivotal time for Gómez. He featured in Colombia’s last two squads before the World Cup, coming off the bench against Croatia and France and logging more than 60 minutes across the fixtures, strengthening his case as an option for Néstor Lorenzo.

Gómez had been a key outlet for Vasco even before this scoring burst. Since arriving in Rio in July last year, no player from a Série A club has provided more assists than his 10 in 42 appearances for the team.
