At 29, Gonçalo Guedes has rediscovered his spark in Donostia, reclaiming a leading role at Real Sociedad. As reported by AS, his resurgence has gathered pace in recent days.
Last Sunday he struck the txuri-urdin goal in the draw at San Mamés against Athletic. Yesterday at Mendizorroza he made it 2-2, the platform for a 2-3 comeback that sent Real Sociedad into the Copa semi-finals.
The Portuguese has put a grey spell at Wolverhampton behind him. He joined in 2022 from Valencia for around €33 million, played 42 league games totalling 1,696 minutes, and scored three times. Struggles to adapt to football in the United Kingdom led to loans at Benfica, one goal, and Villarreal, four goals, before a permanent switch last summer.
Real Sociedad completed the deal for €4 million plus a further €2 million in variables, and he signed through to 30 June 2028. This season he has logged 1,454 minutes. He has six league goals and one in the Copa.
Under Pellegrino Matarazzo he is producing his most eye-catching football in years, blending direct running, bite, speed, vision and pressing. On his presentation he set the aim of becoming the player he had been after not fitting the Premier League. A return to Portugal squads was also a personal target, and with his current output that possibility looks ever closer.
