Real Madrid have confirmed the sale of Gonzalo García to Fulham, ending 11 seasons at the club. The forward will work under Álvaro Arbeloa, who has recently taken charge in London, and has signed until 2031 with an option for a further year.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the agreement is around €40m for 70 percent of his rights plus €2m in add-ons, with Madrid retaining a right of first refusal. The report also notes Arbeloa wants César Palacios for about €10m and has interest in Thiago Pitarch, a deal viewed as more complex.
Gonzalo arrived at Valdebebas in 2014 aged 10 and completed his development through La Fábrica before reaching the first team. Arbeloa previously worked with him in the academy and senior setup, which should aid his adaptation.
Upon signing he expressed gratitude to the board and to Arbeloa, and voiced his excitement to begin.
He posted a farewell to Madrid supporters on social media, reflecting that he always gave everything in white and that the club will always be part of him, while team-mates sent messages of support.
Hopes that La Fábrica talents such as Nico Paz and Gonzalo would feature more in the first team have, for now, given way to sales of academy players.
