Vincent Kompany sent a clear message to his team ahead of the cup round of 16 at 1. FC Union Berlin. At the matchday press conference, the Bayern coach spoke about the lessons learned from the league clash, the special pressure of the cup, the longing for the final – and the personnel situation ahead of the knockout game.

Kompany began by looking back at the Bundesliga match in Köpenick, which ended in a late 2-2 draw at the end of November and halted Munich’s impressive winning streak. The decisive factor for him was how Bayern performed in the final phase: „We can do again what we showed in the last five minutes against Union. We did that against St. Pauli now.“

The Belgian also warned of the opponent’s power: „It’s a knockout game against a physically big team. Union will be hoping to have their moment.“

The longing for Berlin: the positive pressure of the cup

Unlike many coaches, Kompany doesn’t see the pressure as a burden – but as an incentive. „It’s good pressure,“ emphasised the Bayern coach. „At the end of the season, we’d like to have the pressure again, if it’s even greater.“ For him, the only thing that counts in the cup is progressing: „We want to put in a good performance and win – we’re prepared for anything, for 90 minutes or 30 more. The pressure is positive.“

FC Bayern have not been in the DFB Cup final for five years – a small eternity by Munich’s standards. Kompany makes no secret of his desire to return to the Olympiastadion: „I want to go back to Berlin after the game, of course.“ But the coach also warns: „You can always say you want to win everything – but it takes work and attitude. If we show how hungry we are for the final tomorrow, then we have a good chance.“

Kompany’s focus is on one thing only: advancing, regardless of the route. Bayern have been warned – and are ready to take the next step on the road to Berlin.
