Anthony Gordon is expected to sit out Newcastle United’s Premier League clash with Brentford on Sunday due to injury, manager Eddie Howe has confirmed.
The 24-year-old has been dealing with a hip problem for much of the season and was substituted in the first half of Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Club.
“It seems like a recurrence of his hip injury that’s been plaguing him in recent weeks,” Howe said after the game. “So, we’ll assess that and see what damage he’s done.”
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Howe added: “We don’t think it’s a serious injury, but we’re going to get him scanned and we’re awaiting the results. There’s every chance he’ll miss out on Sunday, but we’ll give him every opportunity to be fit.”
The winger also looks set to miss England’s upcoming fixtures against Serbia and Albania during the international break. Gordon has been named in Thomas Tuchel’s last three England squads.
“I’m relaxed about that,” Howe said of the potential withdrawal. “It’ll all be done working together with them to find the right solution for Anthony. It’ll be done with England’s blessing.”
