Granit Xhaka has surprisingly missed out on the Premier League’s Transfer of the Season, with Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens taking the honour.
The Sunderland captain was shortlisted with Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Arsenal’s Premier League winner Viktor Gyokeres, Chelsea forward Joao Pedro, Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert and Manchester City pair Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo.
Lammens impressed in his first season at Old Trafford, the Belgium international keeping eight clean sheets in 32 appearances to help United secure a return to the Champions League.
The former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder played a central role as Sunderland exceeded expectations in their first campaign back in the top flight, sealing a Europa League place. He made 34 appearances in all competitions, with one goal and six assists, and his influence was felt on and off the pitch under Regis Le Bris.
“Even the people closest to me were saying: 'Why are you going back to the Premier League to join Sunderland?’ I came back because I love the challenge and I had the feeling I need a new challenge. I'm just happy that everything at the moment is going how I wanted it to.”
He was speaking to BBC Sport earlier this year.
