Granit Xhaka has marked the first anniversary of his Sunderland move on social media. The player said in a post that he is grateful for the journey so far and ready for another season.

The Swiss midfielder arrived on 30 July last year and quickly became central to a side that exceeded expectations by finishing seventh in the Premier League, which secured Europa League qualification.

Earlier this summer he appeared a candidate for a surprise exit, with newly appointed Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso identifying him as a key transfer target.

Xhaka, 33, has instead opted to remain on Wearside with the new campaign under a month away. His anniversary post, set to Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love, featured a collage of moments from his first year.

Head coach Regis Le Bris has since said the subject is closed, stressing that Xhaka loves Sunderland and wants to help shape its future. He hailed the midfielder as a committed captain and a strong leader.
