Alex Greenwood has been named Manchester City Club captain ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The England international, who regularly wore the armband last season, will now take the responsibility on permanently for Gareth Taylor’s side.

Greenwood, who joined the Club from French side Olympique Lyonnais in 2020, has been one of our most consistent and reliable performers over her four seasons to date.

Only Lauren Hemp has made more than her 124 appearances among the current squad, while she’s helped the Club win both the FA Cup and Continental Cup during her time at the Joie Stadium so far.

She also played a crucial role in City registering the best defensive record across the 2023/24 WSL season, conceding just 15 times as we equalled our best-ever points tally.

Three successive inclusions the in the PFA WSL Team of the Year as well as a spot in the FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11 add further gloss to her already impressive list of achievements in the game since joining City.

And now, ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, Greenwood reaches another milestone in her career, having already been part of the Club’s leadership group before Houghton’s retirement.

“I’m incredibly proud. It’s a real honour to be captain of this fantastic football club and something I’ll do with real pride both on and off the pitch,” she said of being named captain.

“It’s a huge Club with huge ambitions that definitely meets mine. To be named captain with that responsibility is something I’m so excited for and won’t take lightly.

“It won’t change how I approach things, if anything it’ll give me even more motivation to achieve what I want to at City.”
