Grêmio are closing in on the signing of 38-year-old goalkeeper Weverton, who is set to become first choice under Luís Castro. According to Gremistas.net, a three-year deal is in place and Palmeiras have agreed to release him on a free.

The Porto Alegre side reached agreement with the player before advancing talks with Palmeiras, who initially wished to keep him. Weverton spoke with Abel Ferreira and signalled his intention to join Grêmio.

He has been on the bench at Allianz Parque since the arrival of Carlos Miguel. His contract with Palmeiras runs until December, so he was eligible to sign a pre-contract from June.

Palmeiras discussed extending his deal by one season, but could not guarantee the starting spot. That, and the prospect of a defined role in Porto Alegre, helped shape the outcome.

Grêmio’s proposal, including improved salary, proved decisive for the veteran.
