Pep Guardiola’s love of the League Cup continued with victory over Arsenal on Sunday, but just how impressive are the boss’ stats in this competition?
Nico O’Reilly’s headed second-half brace earned us the victory at Wembley on yet another memorable day out at the national stadium.
Having now been in English football for a decade, Guardiola has ensured a lasting legacy across all competitions, not least this one.
Here we look at the numbers behind his 10 years in the League Cup…
Pep is the first and only manager to five League Cup wins since the competition’s inception in 1960.
He surpasses Brian Clough, Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, who all earned this prize four times each.
He has won all five League Cup finals he has competed in, beating Arsenal twice as well as Chelsea, Aston Villa and Spurs.
The first defeat of Arsenal back in 2018 was his first piece of silverware as City boss and therefore is rightly seen as a catalyst to the domestic dominance that followed.
A key part of that dominance was the four-in-a-row Carabao triumphs from 2018 to 2021.
It has furthered our pedigree in this competition dramatically too, with only Liverpool on 10 claiming this trophy more than us.
With 29 victories in his 39 games in this competition, Guardiola’s League Cup win rate is 74%.
With just five defeats and five draws, the boss is used to the taste of winning in the League Cup.
By the nature of cup competitions, he’s gone unbeaten in it in five of his 10 attempts to win this trophy.
City have scored a whopping 83 goals in our 39 League Cup games under Guardiola, coming out at an average of 2.1 per match.
At the other end of the pitch, we’ve only conceded 26 times – just 0.66 per match.
That leaves a stunning goal difference of +57 in 39 matches.
The biggest goal difference we’ve had in any League Cup campaign came in 2018/19, when we scored 16 times in six games and conceded just the one goal on the way to glory.
Phil Foden is far and away the most used player, appearing in 29 of the 39 games under Pep Guardiola.
Given Guardiola’s time in charge has spanned the entirety of Foden’s senior career so far, this competition acted as a key route into the team regularly for the Academy graduate.
Bernardo Silva has now played 23 times in this competition, with Ilkay Gundogan (22), Kevin De Bruyne (21) and Kyle Walker (20) rounding out the top five.
Riyad Mahrez is City’s top scorer in this competition under Pep, netting eight goals in 19 appearances.
Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero got seven each, with Foden on six and De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling on five.
The 10-0 aggregate win over Burton Albion in the semi-finals of the 2018/19 edition is the biggest ever scoreline in a two-legged tie in this competition.
That came with a 9-0 victory in the home leg before a much-changed side completed the job by winning 1-0 on the road.
Our other successful semi-finals have come against Manchester United, Arsenal, Bristol City and Newcastle United.
2025/26 has been another stellar campaign for City in this competition.
We won all six games without the need for extra time or penalties and scored 14 times while letting in just two.
It began with a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town before a 3-1 win at Swansea City.
Brentford were our first Premier League opposition in the quarter-finals, who we beat 2-0, before a 5-1 aggregate defeat of Newcastle United at the last four stage.
Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki have been our top scorers in this season’s Carabao Cup, netting three each.
