Marc Guéhi says the prospect of tackling City colleague Erling Haaland in Saturday’s eagerly-awaited World Cup quarter-final between England and Norway will be ‘fun.’

The City central defender, along with Etihad team-mate Nico O’Reilly, was part of an England side that gained a totemic 3-2 Round of 16 victory against Mexico in the early hours of Monday morning.

The tie, staged at Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium, served both as arguably the most dramatic contest yet of this World Cup – and amongst the most memorable England victories in living memory.

Next up for Thomas Tuchel’s side is that last eight assignment against Norway in Miami, with the clash taking place on Saturday, July 11, kick-off 22.00 (UK).

For Guéhi and O’Reilly, the showdown in Florida will also mean a reunion with Etihad team-mate Erling Haaland, who has enjoyed a stellar World Cup so far, scoring seven goals for his country, including a brilliant brace in Norway’s 2-1 Round of 16 defeat of Brazil.

For the City pair, it’s a prospect they are already savouring with another former Etihad colleague, Oscar Bobb, also part of the Norwegian squad.

“It’s going to be fun!,” Guéhi declared, speaking on the latest episode of the Lions Den. “It is going to be fun, and I know he (Haaland) will be up for it.

“It’s going to be a challenge – it will be good to see some familiar faces, and we are going to try and do our best and try to get the win.”

“To make the quarter-finals is special, very special and a great feeling but we haven’t really got time to be celebrating yet,” O’Reilly added.

“We’ve got another tough game coming and obviously there’s still a few more games to be played for the top eight places, but every team’s going to be tough, and we need to be ready.

“The Mexico match was the craziest game I’ve ever played in.

“At the Azteca the fans were crazy, but we got through it and now we’re in the quarter finals.”

That victory over Mexico saw millions stay up through the night in England to watch the drama unfold while thousands of England supporters were present at the Azteca itself to witness a game that will go down in English folklore.

And for O’Reilly, who has already made a huge impression in what is his first tournament with England, the chance to try and help inspire the next generation of youngsters is serving as an added World Cup incentive.

“Obviously they all look up to us, and we want to make a good example and make the country proud,” the City Academy graduate added.

“I think that’s the most important thing, just to show the love back to everyone that’s showing the love to us.

“The way we do it is by performing and getting the wins on the pitch.”

“[To win in Mexico] was such an amazing moment for everyone there at the stadium, and everyone watching at home,” Guéhi added.

“It was so emotional and we definitely felt it [the support back in England] and from all the fans who travelled there.Even in a loud stadium like the Azteca, they still made their voices heard

“And to everyone who stayed up way, way past their bedtime, thank you so much – we really appreciate it.”
