Gui Negão staying at Corinthians, focused on Copa do Brasil semi-final

With a promising start among Corinthians' professionals, the young Gui Negão, 18, is already attracting interest from other clubs and has had his name mentioned in market speculation. Even so, the forward assures that he is not swayed by outside talk. His focus, he says, is on building his career at Parque São Jorge before considering any move.

“I need to make history at Corinthians first. I want to win titles here, leave my mark here. Then, God willing, things will happen,” he said in an interview with Estadão.

Gui admits that it’s positive to know other clubs are watching him, but he emphasizes that he is focused on his current moment. “It’s nice to know there are clubs watching, that my work is being recognized, but I can say that I’m shielded. I want to make history before thinking about leaving. If one day I have to go, it has to be good for me and for Corinthians. I’m in no rush.”

The forward’s immediate focus is on the Copa do Brasil, a competition that returns to the team’s agenda after the end of the Brasileirão. In December, Corinthians will face Cruzeiro in the semifinals, with home and away matches. Whoever advances will face Fluminense or Vasco da Gama in the tournament’s final, also played over two matches in the last month of the year. Regarding the challenge, Gui shows enthusiasm.

“It’s a big game, a different atmosphere. Against Cruzeiro, it’s going to be a great duel. Playing the second leg at home matters, but we need to go strong to Mineirão. I want to score goals […] May the best team win, and may the best be Corinthians,” he said.

Officially promoted to the professional squad in June, Gui Negão found his first opportunities in the senior team under Dorival Júnior. Today, he is the immediate backup in the attack, surpassing the competition from Ángel Romero and Talles Magno. So far, he has played 22 matches, scored five goals, and provided two assists this season. The player himself says he is very demanding of himself.

“I push myself a lot. Not just for goals, but to come in and play well. To help the team, to honor the shirt. The pressure exists, the attention exists, but I have been preparing for this,” said the number 56.

Even though he’s new to the professional team, Gui already feels his popularity rising and receives more and more affection from fans. Despite this, he makes a point of keeping his feet on the ground and preserving his roots. Raised in Itaquera, the player moved to Tatuapé after his promotion, but he still frequents the neighborhood where he spent his childhood.

“I always dreamed that one day (success) could happen, but I never imagined it would be so fast. I’m very happy with the affection from the fans and from the kids too, who sometimes come to ask for a photo or autograph, and I’m living a dream,” said the forward.

On his visits to his old neighborhood, Gui keeps simple habits, like visiting friends or even flying kites. According to him, this is also a way to inspire those who grew up where he did. “It’s important, yes (to go back to Itaquera), especially because I have friends there. I go to my barber, get my hair cut. I also fly kites in the middle of the street. It’s to show people that it’s possible to be a football player and make your dream come true,” he added.

With the possibility of taking the starting spot in Memphis’ absence, Gui Negão will be available for the match against Botafogo this Sunday, the 30th, at 4pm, at Neo Química Arena. Corinthians reach the final stretch of the Brasileirão with no chance of reaching the G7, the zone that currently offers a spot in the Pre-Libertadores.
