Ahead of tomorrow’s clash between AC Milan and Napoli, the legendary midfielder Ruud Gullit has told a funny anecdote about the famous Scudetto clash back in 1987-88.
The Dutchman helped Milan go from 0-2 behind to 3-2 up in front of the Neopolitan fans at Stadio San Paolo, as the stadium was called then, and it won the Rossoneri the Scudetto in the end. In short, it’s one of the best games in the club’s history.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport this morning, Gullit reminisced about that game in particular and what made it so special. He revealed that Silvio Berlusconi ordered bodyguards to travel with the food and the chefs in a separate airplane, taking all precautions to avoid interference from Napoli.
“It was a great adventure (laughs) because I had never been to Naples in my life. On Saturday, before leaving, I was perplexed because the players and the technical staff were on one plane, while on another smaller one, there were several security personnel and… the food.
“When we arrived at the Jolly Hotel in Naples, we occupied the entire top floor, which was protected by our bodyguards, and only they could get close to the food that was being cooked by the chefs who had left with us. There was the fear that someone might eat something bad and then not be able to play (laughs),” he stated.
Things have calmed down a bit since but Milan still travel with their own chefs, more so for convenience than anything though. Hopefully, we will see a similar comeback (or at least a strong win) tomorrow evening.
