Gustavo Varela, on loan from Benfica at Gil Vicente, has been named Liga Portugal Betclic’s Young Player of the Month for February by the Sindicato de Jogadores.
According to Glorioso 1904, he received the prize on Thursday morning, presented by former striker João Paulo, after scoring three goals for Gil Vicente in a run of three wins and one defeat.
Speaking at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos, he thanked the union, his team-mates and the coaching staff for their support. The striker is making his Primeira Liga debut this season and is competing for a starting place under César Peixoto.
He said the honour carries real significance, that recognition is welcome, and that he intends to keep pushing, hoping this is the first of many.
Varela beat Diogo Sousa and Noah Saviolo of V. Guimarães to the award, taking 18.16% of the vote.
Given a first-team chance by Roger Schmidt at Benfica, he left last summer to join Gil Vicente on loan until the end of this season, with no option to buy.
He remains under contract at Benfica until June 2028 after renewing in March 2024, when he said he wanted to stay, thanked the club for their trust and said he would work towards team and individual goals.
