Chemsdine Talbi’s World Cup cameo for Morocco in the Group C clash with Brazil sparked a playful on-air exchange, as Guy Mowbray cheekily nudged Alan Shearer into praising Sunderland.
According to Sunderland Echo, the winger came on as a second-half substitute after an impressive first season on Wearside following the club’s return to the Premier League.
Under Régis Le Bris, Sunderland finished seventh and qualified for Europe. Talbi also etched himself into recent folklore by scoring the equaliser at St James’ Park in a derby win over Newcastle United.
Talbi’s introduction prompted Mowbray to hail Sunderland’s strong World Cup presence, noting: “One of 12 Black Cats to be playing at this World Cup, which is two more than the Real Madrid contingent, Alan!”
Shearer replied: “Anybody would think you're a Sunderland fan, Guy.” Mowbray responded: “No, I'm just putting it out there for your North East knowledge to shine.”
Shearer added: “Yep. They had a great season, Sunderland, didn't they? And I mean it before everyone jumps.” Mowbray joked: “The teeth were not even gritted. I can vouch for you.”
