GYM trio: Yuri returns, Garro scores, concern for Memphis

On the night of Wednesday, September 10, Corinthians faced Athletico-PR at the Neo Química Arena for the second leg of the Copa do Brasil quarterfinals and won by a score of 2-0. The goals for the Alvinegro were scored by midfielder Rodrigo Garro and forward Gui Negão. With this result, the club from Parque São Jorge advanced to the semifinals after accumulating an aggregate score of 3-0.

The night was marked by a mix of emotions for the GYM trio. The Corinthians number 8 scored his second goal of the 2025 season and found the net for the first time in a Corinthians shirt since March 9. On that occasion, the Alvinegro defeated Santos in Itaquera, 2-1, in the semifinals of the Paulistão.

Since then, it had been 17 games without scoring. In the meantime, the Argentine was sidelined from the pitch while recovering from patellar tendinopathy in his right knee. In the match against Athletico-PR, Garro posted the following stats: one goal, one assist, four key passes, six duels won, and four fouls suffered. The stats are from Sofascore, a sports statistics app, and his rating was 8.5.

On the other hand, the Corinthians coaching staff was given something to worry about. In stoppage time of the first half, Corinthians’ number 10 was substituted – replaced by midfielder Vitinho – due to discomfort in the back of his thigh and will be re-evaluated by the Alvinegro’s medical department this Thursday, September 11. In a press conference, coach Dorival Júnior said he hopes it’s nothing serious with the player.

Meanwhile, striker Yuri Alberto, recovered from inguinal hernia surgery, returned to play for Corinthians after a month. His last appearance was on August 11, in the team’s 2-1 defeat to Juventude at Estádio Alfredo Jaconi, marking the end of the first half of the Brazilian Championship. Since coach Dorival Júnior’s arrival at the end of April, the trio has been available to the manager in only two out of 25 matches—both against Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil round of 16.

Now, Corinthians awaits their opponent for the Copa do Brasil semifinals, which will be either Atlético-MG or Cruzeiro. That match is expected to take place only in December. Before that, however, the Alvinegro shifts focus back to the Brazilian Championship. Next Saturday, September 13, the team will face Fluminense in a match valid for the 23rd round of the Brazilian Championship, at 9 p.m. (Brasília time), at Maracanã Stadium.
