Manchester City eased doubts over their early season form with a commanding 5-1 victory over Burnley at the Etihad. Erling Haaland struck twice in the closing stages while Maxime Esteve endured a nightmare with two own goals that compounded Burnley’s struggles.
City began with control, their passing sharp and their tempo relentless. Jeremy Doku was once again lively, stretching Burnley’s back line with his direct running. The Belgium winger almost found the opener himself, forcing Martin Dubravka into a smart save at the near post.
The breakthrough came soon after, though not in the way City planned. Doku’s low effort was parried out by Dubravka and Esteve, under pressure, sliced his attempted clearance into his own net. It was the first of two costly moments for the French defender.
Against the run of play, Burnley found an unexpected equaliser. Jaidon Anthony, brimming with confidence in recent weeks, scuffed a finish that took a deflection off Ruben Dias and nestled past Gianluigi Donnarumma. The goal gave Burnley hope and briefly unsettled City.
Scott Parker’s side emerged with intent after half time. Lyle Foster came close with a low strike that deflected wide, and Quilindschy Hartman tested Donnarumma with a fierce long-range effort. Those near misses only served to spark City into life.
Matheus Nunes produced the game’s standout moment, volleying superbly after Haaland’s knock-down to restore the lead. The Portugal midfielder then turned provider, sending in a dangerous low cross that Oscar Bobb challenged for, with the final touch again credited to Esteve. Burnley’s resistance was broken, and City’s dominance was unchallenged thereafter.
With the game stretched, Haaland’s predatory instincts came to the fore. He converted clinically from close range before adding his second late on to put the result beyond doubt. The Norwegian has once more underlined his importance, continuing a prolific start to the season.
City’s response to their stuttering August is now clear. Three wins and a draw since then have moved Pep Guardiola’s side back into the Premier League’s top four. While defensive lapses remain a talking point, their attacking efficiency is rarely in question when Haaland is in this form.
Burnley’s encouraging spells should not be overlooked. Anthony again showed his sharpness, while Foster and Hartman offered fleeting signs of threat. Yet individual errors proved costly and the visitors could not sustain their discipline under constant pressure.
Parker will demand greater resilience in the weeks ahead. Against a side of City’s calibre, the margins are always slim, and mistakes rarely go unpunished. For Burnley, this defeat is another reminder of the step up required to compete consistently in the Premier League.
For City, the message is clearer. They remain a force capable of dismantling opponents when confidence flows, and their 5-1 victory against Burnley is both a statement of recovery and a warning to rivals.
