Erling Haaland proved proved to be the difference maker as he delivered the winning blow against Real Madrid with a confidently taken penalty that sealed the 2–1 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Throughout the match, the Norwegian forward was a constant source of trouble for Madrid’s back line, physically overwhelming defenders and repeatedly forcing mistakes, one of which, involving Antonio Rudiger, ultimately led to the spot kick that decided the game.

Speaking after the match, Haaland reflected not only on his performance but also on his connection with former Borussia Dortmund teammate Jude Bellingham

“I miss Jude Bellingham. I miss playing with him. He’s such a good guy,” he said.

On facing Rudiger and Asencio

Haaland then delved deeper into the battles he faced on the pitch against Madrid’s defenders.

Asked about how he managed to unsettle their centre-backs, he offered a candid and humorous explanation.

“You always want to play against the best. After the first minute, Asencio was trying to push me and looking for a fight with me. Personally, I like that. I don’t mind,” he said with a laugh.

He continued, adding his view on his clash with Rudiger,

“I’ve also had some great battles with Rudiger. Today he was looking for too much trouble and pushed me. For me, it was a clear penalty.”

On Mbappe’s absence

The striker admitted he was disappointed not to face one particular opponent – Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman was in the squad but did not feature due to injury concerns and Haaland explained why he had hoped Mbappe would play.

“We knew about his injuries and we don’t like anyone to be injured. We were hoping to play against him. I thought I was going to be able to play against him.

“When you have to play against Kylian and he doesn’t play, you’re not happy… You want to play against the best. It gives you a psychological boost,” he said.

Lastly, Haaland was also asked about the developing rivalry between Real Madrid and Manchester City, a matchup that has become one of European football’s most intense.

His admiration for the Bernabeu was obvious, as he said,

“Of course. It’s great. It’s one of the places where you want to play. Look (he gazes at the Bernabéu stands), it’s incredible.

“It’s the kind of game you want to play,” he concluded.
